Sweet spring fragrance

It seems as if every Island farm has an old lilac tree planted somewhere in the yard. Most of the year it blends in quietly with the other shrubs, but in May it bursts into beautiful purple, mauve, pink or white blossoms. When I pass by a bush, I can't help but bury my nose in the blooms and inhale the intoxicating sweetness of their fragrance.

My mother tucked lilac blossom soap among the sheets and pillow cases in the linen closet - my pillowcase always smelled so fresh!




...In the garden below were lilac trees purple with flowers and their dizzily sweet fragrance drifted up to the window on the morning wind...
